Viktoria Mullova's new CD is an all Prokofiev affair - the second Violin Concerto, with long term musical collaborator Paavo Jarvi, and the Sonata for 2 Violins where she is joined by Tedi Papravami, plus the Solo Violin Sonata. All the works were recorded live, with no retakes and the playing is electrifying. This is Viktoria's second recording of the concerto. It is one of her favourite concertos, and her approach to the work has changed greatly since she made the early recording for Philips - a recording she admits to being unhappy with.
'This is unquestionably one of the finest modern performances of the Second Concerto but the best on the album is yet to come. Mullova pairs the concerto with the contemporaneous Sonata for Two Violins and 1947's Solo Violin Sonata. Cloud by cloud, the sky darkens over Stalin’s Russia and the composer....Her interpretation dances on the edge of an abyss and somehow ends up on its feet. 50 minutes of death-defying music must be heard to be believed'
'Her attack and dynamism are complemented by the meltingly beautiful second movement [Concerto] melody that dips and arches, leaving an entrancing trail....terrific stuff...'
