Their second duo album on Signum Classics, Viktoria Mullova and Alasdair Beatson perform Beethoven’s Sonatas 6, 1 and 8. Just as in previous recordings, they use a copy of an 1805 Walter (a Viennese fortepiano) by Paul McNulty; together with violin strung with gut, these instruments are what Beethoven’s music craves, giving a rich texture and distinct colours between the registers.

“[The sonatas] A set that is “optimistic, ebullient and inexhaustibly inventive” – Alasdair Beatson

[Beatson is] undoubtedly a fine player, and in the [Op. 12 No. 1] sonata’s outer movements both he and Mullova convey the full energy and quirkiness of the young Beethoven at his most provocatively original.

The easeful interplay between pianist Alasdair Beatson and violinist Viktoria Mullova stands out on these three sunny sonatas

Beatson plays on a copy of an 1805 fortepiano that’s capable of a range of colour from harpsichord-like jangle to mellow pianistic smoothness, which he exploits to the full. Buoyed on the top of this, Mullova’s playing, on gut strings, is historically informed but not dogmatically so...What stands out is the balance and ease of interplay between the two musicians
